Summary

The Enchanté Network connects and supports 2SLGBTQIA+ community organizations across Canada. They brought rural 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations together to discuss key issues and opportunities that impact their communities and identify systems-level barriers in their work. The resulting Toolkit guides 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations serving rural and remote communities to create inclusive organizational structures related to Indigenous reconciliation and decolonization.

Policy & Practice Implications

  • Engaging in reconciliation and decolonization efforts in rural areas presents unique challenges including navigating the impact of political and cultural climate, resource extraction and land use practices, and social isolation.
  • The Toolkit offers approaches to organizational decolonization and reconciliation, offering rural 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations guidelines for avoiding Indigenous-washing and practicing ethical allyship.
  • The Toolkit’s definitions of decolonization, reconciliation, and Indigenization, along with related terms and reflection activities, offer organizations a common language for identifying their allyship priorities.
