Summary

The Calgary Youth Employment Initiative (CYEI) supports better employment outcomes for young people in Calgary. It funds local projects and shares practical resources to help employers and community partners support youth who face barriers to employment. 

OY Works is an online resource for employers with an easy-to-use Toolkit, an Agency Directory, and linked research to help with hiring, onboarding, retention, and growth for Opportunity Youth. Opportunity Youth are young people aged 18–29 who are ready to work but face barriers to education, training, and employment. The tools are practical, adaptable, and based on real workplace experience. The linked research provides data to support employers’ hiring decisions, including PolicyWise’s research.  

Policy & Practice Implications

  • Employers can use the Toolkit’s tips and examples to attract, onboard, and retain Opportunity Youth.
  • Employers can find and connect with non-profit organizations that support youth through the Agency Directory. 
  • Employers can refer to the data in the linked research to make their business case for hiring Opportunity Youth.
